How to Get Porting Code from Airtel, Jio, Vi, BSNL

How to get a mobile number porting code from Airtel, Jio, Vi, and BSNL, illustrated with a smartphone displaying a porting code and SIM card.

You want to port out of the network and keep the number. The first step is to know how to get a porting code. This is same for almost every operator in India.

The code is named UPC. You make it from the SIM you already have. Only the new operator will take it. They will not do it for you.

Quick Answer Box

Text or SMS “PORT 98XXXXXXXX” to 1900 from the number you wish to port. The UPC was founded in 1901. Valid for 4 days in most of India (30 days in J&K, Assam and North East). Airtel, Jio, Vi and BSNL all follow same steps. SIM and SMS must be working. There is no official shortcut for "without SMS".

How Do I Obtain a Porting Code from My Current Mobile Service Provider?

  1. Make sure the number has been active with this operator for more than 90 days.

  2. Clear any postpaid dues. A pending bill can block the code.

  3. Open the message app on that SIM.

  4. Type:
    PORT 9876543210
(PORT, space, your 10-digit number. Case does not matter.)

  5. Send it to 1900.

  6. Wait for the reply from 1901. It contains the 8-character UPC and the expiry.

That's the whole generation step. It is still described like this in TRAI’s customer guide and FAQ.

The code is issued by the current carrier (Airtel, Jio, Vi or BSNL). You don’t usually call their customer care and “request” it. The request is the SMS.

What Is the Process to Get a Porting Code for Switching Mobile Networks?

  • Confirm eligibility >90 days with current operator No ownership-change request pending No court or contractual bar (postpaid) Unpaid bills cleared

  • SMS PORT to 1900 from the number itself.

  • Look at the UPC and when it expires.

  • In that window, go to the new operator (store, or their app/site where they allow it) with the UPC and KYC (Aadhaar or other accepted ID, photo and for postpaid a paid bill copy).

  • They make the port request. You receive a confirmation SMS and a short withdrawal window.

  • The number moves, usually in a few working days, with a short overnight cutover.

The porting itself is operator to operator as per TRAI rules. The UPC is just the ticket that shows you control the number today.

How to Get Airtel Porting Code, Jio, Vi and BSNL

The SMS does not change.

From the Airtel SIM: PORT <your number> to 1900.

From the Jio SIM, same SMS to 1900. If the number has no active plan and cannot send SMS, you cannot generate the code until SMS works. “Without recharge” only works if the SIM can still send that one message. A fully barred or expired prepaid line usually cannot.

How to get port code in vodafone

Vi (Vodafone Idea) uses the identical format to 1900.

How to get porting code in bsnl

Same SMS from the BSNL number to 1900.

Operator help pages and 2026 porting guides all point back to this single TRAI method.

Where Can I Request a Mobile Number Porting Code Online?

How to get upc port code online

You can't generate the UPC on a website in regular circles. From 1901, after the PORT message to 1900, the code is only sent by SMS to the mobile number.

What you can do online, after you already have the UPC:

  • Some recipient operators (the new network) allow you to initiate the port request through their app or website.

  • You still type or upload the UPC you get by SMS and KYC.

  • The generation step is on the old SIM.

Don’t use if a page or a person offers to “get your port code online” without you sending the SMS from the number. That’s not the TRAI process. Numbers get transferred by sharing OTPs or the UPC.

How Long Does It Take to Receive a Porting Code After Applying?

In normal conditions the reply from 1901 arrives within a few minutes. If it does not:

  • Confirm the number can send SMS (balance or plan active enough for one SMS).

  • Validity received once:RT, space, then the 10 digits, to 1900.

  • Try again once.

  • If that still doesn't work, the queue may be ineligible (under 90 days, dues, recent SIM swap, or a bar). Current operator customer care can tell you why, but they do not give you a manual UPC in the standard flow.

Validity after you receive it:

  • 4 days in most licenced services areas.

  • 30 days in Jammu & Kashmir, North East and Assam.

Expiry is mentioned on the SMS itself. Go with that date.

Prepaid users in Jammu & Kashmir dial 1900 rather than sending SMS. The operator checks the CLI and gives the UPC.

Port Code Without SMS

How to get port code without sms

Most of India does not have an official method. The concept here is that the person with the working SIM can generate the code. This is the protection against unauthorised porting.

If SMS doesn’t work:

  • If you have sent out SMS, recharge the minimum amount that will activate it, and then send PORT to 1900.

  • For postpaid, clear dues to avoid queue.

  • If SIM is lost then first get duplicate SIM from current operator (with KYC) Then create the UPC only. You can't port a number that isn't yours.

Whoever gives you a UPC without the SMS from your number, they are not following the process. Once you have OTP, Aadhaar OTP or UPC, don’t share it.

After the Code Arrives

  • Do not forward the UPC SMS.

  • Complete the request with the new operator before expiry.

  • Same-circle ports are often quoted around 3 working days; cross-circle longer. You will get an SMS with the cut-over window. There is normally a short period with no service while the number moves.

  • Keep the old SIM until the new one is active, then it stops working.

Corporate numbers can take longer and may need extra authorisation from the company.

People Also Ask

Q: How do I get a porting code?

SMS PORT followed by your 10-digit number to 1900 from that number. The UPC arrives from 1901.

Q: Is it the same for Airtel, Jio, Vi and BSNL?

Yes. The generation SMS is identical.

Q: Can I get it online?

You can submit a UPC you already received on some new-operator sites. You cannot generate it online without the SMS from the SIM.

Q: How long until I receive it?

Usually a few minutes. If not, check SMS is working and the line is eligible.

Q: How long is it valid?

4 days in most of India, 30 days in J&K, Assam and the North East. The SMS states the date.

Q: What if I have no balance or SMS is blocked?

Recharge or clear dues so one SMS can go out. There is no official code without that access.

Q: What documents does the new operator need?

The UPC plus KYC (and a paid bill for postpaid). They issue the new SIM.

Q: Where does EchoLeads.ai fit?

It does not. EchoLeads.ai is for business voice and outreach on numbers you already control. It does not generate UPCs, port consumer SIMs, or replace the 1900 SMS. Keep porting codes off any calling platform.

Porting codes are a consumer telecom step. For business calling on numbers you already own, contact the EchoLeads.ai team.
